Time For The Hats To Come Off In Youth Hockey!

The hat trick, simply put, is the scoring of 3 goals in a single ice hockey game by the same player. Highly regarded, rejoiced, and recurring in the NHL, fans throw their hats on the ice in appreciation of the feat.

Sadly I have never seen a hat trick at an NHL game live and in person. It's been the bane of my existence. Almost as bad as Shane Doan of the Phoenix Coyotes' inability to get one until 2012 after 1161 games!

However, I have seen hat tricks in youth hockey. The question is, why don't we celebrate them with the traditional hat toss? After witnessing Radim Vrbata's 5th career hatty in the Coyotes home opener this year, I got to wondering why I haven't thought about it before. Maybe because I have a goalie and she has yet to score one from her side, much less three!

But I wanna throw a hat too!

Is it because we don't want to draw attention to an individual player at this level? Or do hockey parents just not want to give up their hats because they cost money and god knows we are all broke? Is it too hard to get them on the ice with the netting? Is it a USA Hockey rule? Is everyone afraid to do it?

My internet research led me nowhere. I couldn't find anything on the hat toss in youth hockey, not even on YouTube. If you find something, let me know.

Now you do know what this means. I am going to have to try it. I have that crazy goalie mom rep to protect.

Will I be kicked out of the game?

Stay tuned.

Actually I may start with this old timey fedora. Really throw everyone off!
